DnD House Rule Idea to Speed Combat: Max Damage!

Combat is DnD 5E tends to drag a bit too long due to HP bloat IMHO.

A goblin had 4 HP average in B/X ( 1 HD -1) versus  7 HP average in 5E. An adult red dragon had 45 HP average in B/X (10HD) versus 256 HP average in 5E.  A 6th level fighter with 14 CON had 33 HP average in B/X (6d8+6) versus 50 HP average in 5E (6d10+12 w max at lvl 1).

Meanwhile, damage has not increased at quite the same rate. A 5E fighter has a higher STR damage bonus and feats, but is still only doing maybe d8+5 instead of d8+1. A  red dragon bite did 4d8 (18 avg) in B/X and does 2d8+2d6+8 (24 avg) in 5E. Consequently it just takes more hits to settle each combat.

Proposed house rule solution: Max Damage!  The "d" in "d8" no longer stands for "dice." It stands for "damage." If your longsword does d8+2 including STR bonus, you always do 10 damage, or more on a crit. No damage roll. Same for monsters. The adult red dragon does 20 damage with claws, instead of rolling 2d6+8.

To keep things fair, higher level spells should do a bit less than max, because the probability of rolling max on multiple dice is much lower, so giving spells max damage would make them deadlier relative to weapons. So I propose that spells of spell level 3 and higher should do 5 pts per d6 or 6 pts per d8 or 8 pts per d10. Example: red prismatic ray (8d10) would do 8x8= 64 damage. Fireball (8d6) would do 8x5 = 40 damage (unless the target saves for half damage of course).

Higher damage will chip away at everyone's hit points faster. You also save the time spent actually rolling. It should be balanced since it is the same effect on friend and foe.

Saxon Crawl Classics

Last year I completed Saxon Crawl Classics, a supplement for Dungeon Crawl Classics that provides a campaign set during the wars of the Saxons vs the Vikings in 9-10th century Britain. It was for sale on the Goodman Games website for about seven or eight months. Then Goodman Games sent an email to 3rd-party publishers announcing that they would no longer host third-party products, due to the overhead effort.

I would like to have Saxon Crawl Classics available for folks. I may arrange to offer it for sale somewhere else in the future so that a print version can be available. In the meantime, here it is for free.

Here is a link to the original Reddit thread where I was getting feedback about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/dccrpg/comments/1asnl74/saxon_crawl_classics/

I may further develop this campaign, perhaps for a different RPG. I would like to add more details about the years of the campaign, more locations, more information about patron saints...

If anyone has played it, I would love to know what you thought. Leave a comment!

Pseudodragon

This is a personal project I've been working on for years. It started as house rules for my Pendragon campaign. It basically allows you to use Pendragon for other historical settings in antiquity, and to play characters that arent knights. It converts BRP d100 content (spells, monsters, magic, etc) from other games to a d20 Pendragonish system. I tried to ensure it follows the Chaosoum rules for fan-made content. Feedback welcome. Still a work in progress.

Shadowdark Downtime Activity: Side Quest

The base Shadowdark rules provide two downtime activities: carousing and learning. It seems like there is room for more options. I enjoy downtime as a way for players to flesh out the personalities of their characters.

Here is a downtime option I am proposing: a side quest.  This enables a character to pursue an adventure "off camera" between the main adventures that the GM narrates. The goal is to enable this with minimal time and effort required at the table so that it doesn't distract from the main storyline.

The idea is inspired by solo quests from the Pendragon RPG.

Shadowdark Warrior/Mage

My very first D&D character in 1980 was an elf, and so I've been in love with various fighter/magic user character types ever since. Here is my attempt to create one for Shadowdark. I made a deliberate effort to make it weaker in combat than a fighter and worse at spellcasting than a wizard so as not to supersede either standard class. I might have overdone it, in fact. Let me know what you think.
I suspect some will say "Just play a Knight of St Ydres or Necromancer" but that doesn't scratch this itch. For me, the appeal of a warrior mage is that they are seeking occult knowledge. I want them to have to hunt for spells, rather than have them granted.
